BCPS superintendent, county executive to announce winners of “Clean Green” anti-litter campaign

BCPS schools benefitted from spring clean-up projects

What:            BCPS Superintendent Dr. Dallas Dance and Baltimore County Executive Kevin Kamenetz will join withDeborah Phelps, director of the Education Foundation of Baltimore County Public Schools, to announce the winners of the first ever “Team BCPS Clean Green 15” anti-littering initiative. Last May, the new effort to beautify Baltimore County communities encouraged BCPS schools and community organizations to conduct litter clean-ups and beautification projects in part through the incentives of receiving environmental grants as prizes. Through June, hundreds of schools and volunteers conducted scores of clean-up events, the results of which will be announced during Tuesday’s event.

Background:

Through the initiative, participating groups registered their “Clean Green” 15-minute event on the BCPS web site and designated which BCPS school would receive credit for their efforts. Environmental grants from the Education Foundation of Baltimore County will be awarded to schools based upon the clean-up activity credited to winning schools as well as other anti-litter education and outreach efforts. Grants range from the $4,000 grand prize award to $2,000 grants for first prize winners on the elementary, middle and high school levels. Second-place winners will receive STEM resource enrichment education conducted by Hot Spots Extended Care Programs, Inc. Grants are to be used for school-based instruction that emphasizes the theme of environmental literacy. Sponsors include Comcast, Hot Spots, the Maryland Environmental Service and the Baltimore County Department of Environmental Protection and Sustainability.
