Making connections: How BCPS mentorship programs are making a difference countywide

In honor of National Mentorship Month, we visited two schools to see how their programs benefit students. At Woodholme Elementary, staff members volunteer to serve as student mentors. At Patapsco High, Grade 11 students visit Gen. John Stricker Middle students once every three weeks for relationship building.

Learn more about how Team BCPS is making a difference through mentoring in our blog post.

BCPS community unites by wearing blue

With nearly 600 photos and videos shared, it’s little wonder Team BCPS Day trended on Twitter twice January 12. We appreciate everyone wearing blue once again for Team BCPS Day, a fun way for everyone to show their support for public education in Baltimore County.

Inspired by so much blue creativity, we just had to give out some awards.

It’s not too late to get started in this anti-littering program. For more details about the challenge, check out our blog update.

Parenting Tip of the Week:

New online resources available about learners from birth to PreKindergarten

BCPS Parent University offers a wealth of information and resources relating to learners at every step of their academic careers from PreKindergarten through Grade 12 and beyond.

But as every parent knows, a child’s learning starts far earlier than PreKindergarten. And now, visitors to the Parent University website will find a new section dedicated specifically to the needs of the very youngest learners from birth to Kindergarten.

The new resource page is the product of a partnership between BCPS and the Baltimore County Early Childhood Advisory Council. We invite you to check it out. You will find information about services benefiting early childhood, Baltimore County Public Library programs, BCPS programs for early childhood and resources for users.

Here’s a list of Parent University events happening soon.

Correspond-DANCE

A weekly memo from the superintendent

 Dear Team BCPS:

In about a week, we’ll invite the Team BCPS community — including students in Grades 4-12 and all parents, staff, and community members — to take the Stakeholder Survey. Your past responses have been used to guide school improvement, staff training, office safety, and office reorganization — your voices matter.

The Stakeholder Survey is anonymous and only takes about five minutes to complete on your phone, tablet, or computer. And, it will be available in 16 languages for students, parents, and community members. So starting January 30, share your voice, and help us improve even more.

As we move forward in the budget process, the Board of Education will hold two work sessions on the proposed operating budget for the 2017-2018 school year:tomorrow, January 24 at 6:30 p.m., and January 31 at 5:30 p.m. Learn more about the budget here.
