BCPS schools to welcome parents, community for American Education Week (#BCPSedweek2015)

Schools planning special events, visitations for Nov. 16-20

TOWSON, Md. — Baltimore County Public Schools will celebrate American Education Week 2015 with an assortment of countywide and school-based activities designed to showcase teaching and learning and highlight multiple new initiatives within BCPS schools.

During American Education Week, most schools set aside specific times for parents to visit their student’s classrooms and host a variety of special events. We encourage all Team BCPS members to tweet photos and events to us using #BCPSedweek2015.

Countywide events during American Education Week include the BCPS High School Honors Concert at 7:30 p.m. on Monday, November 16, at the Carl J. Murphy Fine Arts Center at Morgan State University, and the Baltimore County Business Advisory Council Speaker Series featuring Buck Showalter. This inaugural Speaker Series event is also on Monday, at George Washington Carver Center for the Arts and Technology, starting at 7 p.m.

“American Education Week is a great opportunity for members of the Team BCPS community to see all of the wonderful things happening in our classrooms each day,” said BCPS Superintendent S. Dallas Dance. “It gives us a chance to see how we, as members of the BCPS community, can further support teaching and learning in order to guarantee the success of our young people. I invite all parents, grandparents, caregivers, community members, and business partners into our schools to see the outstanding work that’s being done on a daily basis.”

As a part of American Education Week, we also are encouraging parents to sign up for BCPS One, the online platform that allows parents to check their student’s grades, access curriculum, find parenting resources and more. Among the many special events planned in BCPS schools are the following:

  • New Town Elementary School (4924 New Town Blvd, Owings Mills, 21117) is hosting a Healthy Cooking Demonstration for parents on Monday, November 16 at 10 a.m.
  • Old Court Middle School (4627 Old Court Road, Baltimore, 21208) will host a white coat ceremony for students participating in theHealth Sciences elective class, a science spelling bee, and a forensics crime scene investigation for parents and students at various times on Tuesday, November 17.
  • Bear Creek Elementary (1601 Melbourne Road, Baltimore, 21222) will welcome students from Patapsco High School who plan to mentor students in Grades 4 and 5 throughout the year on Tuesday, November 17.
