Thank you, Burlington Stores, for Your Generosity!

When the phone rings at The Education Foundation Headquarters, we never know who is going to be on the other line. We have become used to many wonderful surprises. This summer we received a call from Burlington Stores who sought out the Foundation to deliver good news that a new store opening would be taking place in one of Baltimore County’s communities; Towson Place at 1238 Putty Hill Avenue, Towson, MD. Of course, congratulations were in order. We celebrate the growth of business which typically sustains new employment opportunities and revenue growth to the surrounding neighborhoods.

What we did not know, was that Burlington Stores wanted to celebrate their new store opening by giving back to a Baltimore County Public School located in the Towson area.

The phone call received at the Foundation this summer included proposed message; Burlington Stores, the national off price retailer, and AdoptAClassroom.org, a national non-profit organization dedicated to supporting teachers and their students, would like to partner with a BCPS school.   To celebrate Burlington’s new store opening, the stores’ team members would like to attend a school assembly to present an oversized check for $10,000 which will be divided equally among classroom teachers so they can purchase supplies they need for their classrooms through AdoptAClassroom.org.

This generous outreach from Burlington Stores was shared by Deborah S. Phelps, Executive Director of The Education Foundation of BCPS with the Principal of Pleasant Plains Elementary School, Joyce Albert and Assistant Principal, Sean McComb. Together they connected with Brian Bridegum, Regional Vice President Maryland/Delaware, Michelle West, Store Manager, Brian McConnell, and Asst. Store Manager at Burlington Stores to plan the BIG check presentation with Sarah Fowler, Assistant Account Manager at AdoptAClassroom.org.

The $10,000 check presentation took place on Friday September 7, 2018 at Pleasant Plains Elementary School. Ms. Heidi Miller, Executive Director of Elementary School, Central zone joined those mentioned above from Burlington Stores, AdoptAClassroom.org, The Education Foundation of BCPS and leadership from Pleasant Plains Elementary School. Teachers and students applauded the generous donation received with enthusiasm and gratitude.

“Making a difference, one teacher at a time. The tools we help bring to teachers have a direct impact on our kids and how they learn. And every crayon, calculator and contribution add up.”* Burlington Stores sustains the concept that when teachers have the supplies in hand, needed to sustain learning in the classroom, students are the ones who benefit most. As community partners continue to contribute their time, talent and treasure, the future of education continues to thrive.

We can begin by doing small things at the local level, like planting community gardens or looking out for our neighbors. That is how change takes place in living systems, not from above but from within, from many local actions occurring simultaneously.”
