TEAM BCPS Clean Green 15: Litter Challenge
At the end of the 2013-2014 school year Baltimore County Public Schools partnered with Baltimore County Executive Kevin Kamenetz and the Baltimore County Department of Environmental Protection and Sustainability (EPS) to host Team BCPS Clean Green: 15 Litter Challenge.
Through this program, BCPS schools and their community supporters conducted quick 15-minute litter clean-ups and competed to see which school communities could log the most clean-ups. Community groups could include school-based groups, places of worship, youth groups, civic or community groups, scout troops, sport teams, businesses or other organizations and environmental organizations and others that wish to help clean up their community. Groups were asked to report their clean-ups on the BCPS website.
The Education Foundation of Baltimore County Public Schools awarded grants to the top winning schools to fund school-based instructional projects emphasizing the theme of environmental literacy. Review and award of projects conducted by the schools, were based on the school communities participating and recording the most 15-minute litter clean-ups, including all sorts of groups who choose to designate a particular school to receive credit.
As a grant recipient, projects must address an identified environment within their school community that is aligned with Baltimore County Public Schools goals for academics and key actions as stated in the BCPS Blueprint 2.0: Our Way Forward and the school progress plans. The project must have clear measurable objectives, overall impact and potential for successful implementation. Grant implementation must be conducted and supervised by BCPS professional personnel who works directly with students, including teachers, school counselors, media specialist, nurses, etc. Projects must address an identified need that is aligned with BCPS goals for academics, strategic initiatives and key actions as stated in the BCPS Blueprint 2.0: Our Way Forward and the School Progress Plan. Funds may not replace normal funding from tax-based sources. The proposal should describe a quantitative and/or qualitative method to evaluate the success of the project. Funds may cover travel, participation in events/activities, consulting fees, and speaker honorariums. Funds may not cover personnel or any related expenses for BCPS staff.
The Education Foundation of Baltimore County Public Schools, Inc. solicits the community to obtain partnerships in order to award the winning schools funding to continue their efforts. The collaborative process educates our students and the school community about litter including our civic and community groups, to record the litter clean-ups and number of volunteers who participated.
