OPEN for Business

The Education Foundation of Baltimore County Public Schools is finding new ways to continue support for educators and students of BCPS.  What does going back to school mean as the new school year approaches?  At this time, we do not know, however, assistance can still be provided.

Recently, Deep Creek Middle School requested support from the foundation, and assistance was given.  When the restorative practices coordinator, Ms. Aretha Washington contacted the foundation and requested assistance for new 6th grade students entering middle school to participate in the AVID program for the upcoming school year, the foundation responded.  For reference, AVID represents Advancement Via Individual Determination.   It is a K-12 College Readiness System whose mission is to close the achievement gap by preparing all students for college readiness and success in a global society. “The AVID College Readiness System transforms the instruction, systems, leadership and culture of a school, ensuring improved academic performance for all students based on increased opportunities.”  AVID is an elective program, therefore funding to support the program is typically required unless materials are provided by the student.

When Ms. Washington contacted the foundation, the immediate need was a list of school supplies required for their AVID program.  The list included items such as binders, dividers, paper, notebooks, pencils, pencil cases, and fundamental tools for organizational purposes for 150 students.  On Wednesday, June 24, 2020, Ms. Washington was joined by Deep Creek Middle Schools counselor, Mr. Kenneth Hopson with a visit to the foundation’s collaborative educator resource center, The Exchangeree in Windsor Mill, MD.  Together they received an estimated value of $4700.00.  The supplies were counted, boxed, and transported to the school where they will be sorted for each student and prepared for distribution at the school.

The foundation looks forward to collaborating with educators across the district for future initiatives that fall outside allocated funds for the ongoing programs offered at BCPS at both The Exhangeree in Windsor Mill and at The Avenue in White Marsh.  If you are interested in reaching out to the foundation to either contribute to programs or identify new initiatives, your partnerships are welcome.
