Baltimore County Public Schools invites community to gear up for new school year

TOWSON, MD. – As Baltimore County Public Schools prepares to open for students on Aug. 24, the school system invites all community members, businesses, and institutions to support the success of BCPS students and schools.

“Last year, we launched our first Back to School Involves, You, Too! campaign,” said Dr. S. Dallas Dance, BCPS superintendent. “This year we are expanding it to reach more businesses and communities with messages about how they can play a critical role in ensuring higher academic achievement for all BCPS students and how the success of our schools and communities is interdependent.” 

This year’s Back to School Involves You, Too! campaign, supported by the Education Foundation of Baltimore County Public Schools, will begin on Saturday, Aug. 1, 2015, and continue through September. Campaign components include: 

School Supply Drive

From Aug. 1-14, the five Office Depot stores in Baltimore County (Timonium, Reisterstown, Joppa Rd., Lansdowne, and Catonsville) will encourage their customers to donate school supplies for BCPS students. Other businesses and organizations also are encouraged to gather and donate supplies. Please call 410-887-7801 for more information.

Parentmobile

The Parentmobile, an award-winning mobile BCPS parent resource center, will be at the following locations:

  • Saturday, Aug. 8, at Jesus House Baltimore, 7710 Windsor Mill Road, 21244 from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.
  • Thursday, Aug. 20, at Perry Hall High School, 7621 Labyrinth Road, 21208, from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m.
  • Friday, Aug. 21, at the Catonsville Presbyterian Church Family Child Care Center, 1400 Frederick Road, 21228, from 6 to 7 p.m.
  • Tuesday, Aug. 25, at Johnnycake Elementary School, 5910 Craigmont Road, 21228, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
  • Tuesday, Aug. 25, at Scotts Branch Elementary School, 8220 Tawnmoore Road, 21244, from 6 to 7 p.m.
  • Friday, Aug. 28 at BCPS Headquarters, Greenwood-Building E, 6901 N. Charles Street, 21204, from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m.
  • Tuesday, Sept. 1, at Red House Run Elementary School, 1717 Weyburn Road, 21237, from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

4th Annual Back to School Festival

Sponsored by Kevin Liles for a Better Baltimore Foundation, this festival will take place at Security Square Mall on Saturday, Aug. 29, from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. The festival features the distribution of free backpacks, school supplies, and food as well as free haircuts and immunizations. The BCPS Parentmobile, children’s activities, entertainment, community resources, and surprise VIP guests also will be found there.

Attendance public service announcement contest

Throughout September, BCPS students will be encouraged to create original “commercials” promoting the importance of students coming to school on time and every day. These videos can be up to 60-seconds long. Prizes will be awarded at the elementary, middle, and high school levels.

Baltimore County Day with the Orioles

The community is invited to celebrate Baltimore County Day with the Orioles on Saturday, Sept. 12 at 1:05 p.m. The Orioles will be playing the Kansas City Royals, and $5 of every ticket sold will benefit the Education Foundation of Baltimore County Public Schools. Tickets can be purchased at www.orioles.com/tix/balcounty.

Parent University Workshop for Grandparents

The “Great to be Grand” workshop will be offered by the BCPS Parent University and hosted at Boscov’s department store in White Marsh Mall. Educational consultant and grandmother Dr. Frances T. Bond will lead a lively conversation about the joys and challenges of being a grandparent. The workshop will be held at Boscov’s onMonday, Sept. 21, from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
